Participatory Design is a strategy that is used to bring users to the heart of the design process. It is done so that the solutions we design meet with the needs of the intended users. While working on designing solutions, it is common to include the users and the clients in the early phases of the process- the research phase, for example. Participatory design (in its origins also called co-operative design) is a relatively new approach to designing products. It successfully involves the stakeholders, designers, researchers, and end-users in the design process in order to help ensure that the end product meets the needs of its intended user base. Participatory Design has a much more establish history than most of the other sub-genres of co-design I’ve been looking at. Participatory design is considered – to be both a process and a strategy – which brings end-users and customers to design (and, one could argue, development) process.
